I was a jew, and although my friends arranged for me to join them in the United States, I intially refused because I felt that to leave Europe would be to give up, and that I needed to stay to be true to the critical theory that I had spent my career developing. Finally, it became evident that I could no longer remain in Europe. I set out from France to Spain in order to board a ship to the US where my friends were waiting. Although I had papers, the borders were closed and we had to climb through the mountains on foot, during which time I suffered a series of minor heart attacks, probably because of the 2,000 page manuscript I was carrying in my suitcase. When we arrived in Port Bou, my party was denied entrance into Spain and sent back to France. That night, I committed suicide by swallowing cyanide capsules in my hotel room. The next day, the rest of my traveling companions were granted entry into Spain. FML.
